The One Computer as a Cooperative/Collaborative
Learning Tool
Objectives
- explain how the goals in collaborative and cooperative
learning differ from those in other types of schoolwork.
- identify key elements of cooperative learning and
management.
- review software and Internet sites that
can create dynamic classroom discussion and develop critical-thinking,
problem-solving, and
decision-making skills.
- infuse a cooperative learning strategy into a lesson.
- manage
cooperative groups in a technology-oriented classroom.
Introduction
Before
class, have the following details for the cooperative group activity worked
out:
1. how students are to divide themselves into teams (e.g., by
assignment, by drawing lots, or by personal preference)
2. how many students should be on each team (2, 3, or 4, usually)
3. what the team composition should be (heterogeneous or homogeneous;
all male, all female, or mixed)
4. which questions each team should work on
5. when the activity is officially over
6. how to bring the activity to closure
7. how to grade the activity (if at all)
8. assign an active role for everyone within each team
9. have "sponge" activities that teams can work on if they
finish earlier than other teams
